History Of Womens Golf

Woman's golf has made strides over the last 20 years to parallel those of any other woman's sport. It must be recognized, however, that the successes of Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa were preceded by true pioneers of the sport. The History Of Woman's Golf cannot be addressed without first reflecting on the spectacular career of Babe Didrikson Zaharias.

In an age of heavy sexism against women competing in sports of physical exertion, Zaharias made a name for herself in all realms of amateur and professional sports. She was named the World's Most Versatile Female Athlete by the Guinness Book of World Records due to her accomplishments in track and field's and other athletic ventures.

Golf was a challenge Zaharias took on much later in life, but with no less zeal or acclaim. She won every title possible to a professional golfer and was the first female to successfully compete with men in PGA tournaments. It is a testament to her courage as much as her prowess that Zaharias followed the call to challenge men on the tour. Nearly 60 years passed after Zaharias' reign before female golfers again took shots on the PGA tour.

Today, women's golf is bigger than ever. There has been an interesting transition over the last half century from American and European domination to the age of Asian-born players winning the majority of events on the LPGA tour.

Many sponsors initially balked at the influx of these players, particularly their lack of fluency in English. After consideration by the LPGA to make fluency in English a requirement, an uproar developed in defense of these Asian-born women who truly deserve the same rights Zaharias did when stepping into a foreign competitive environment.
