Baggy, dull and ill-fitting plus size clothing is a thing of the past. With the American population getting heavier through the years, fashion designers and retailers are recognizing the need and the market for plus size clothing.

At JC Penney where I used to work a few years ago, we had an extensive plus size clothing department for women. In fact, the women's plus size section expanded twice the size for the period of my five-year stay there. I can say that sales alone from that section were tremendous.

While the women's plus size section is commendable, it's a different story at the men's section. I recall having at least one or two male customers asking where the big and tall section was and regrettably telling them that we did not have such.

I revisited my former workplace not too long ago and found out, much to my delight, that they now have a big and tall section for men. Another interesting finding was that the clothes on that particular section do sell very well. I think that incorporating the same styles from the regular sized men's clothing to the plus size section certainly boosted sales up. This same strategy was actually adopted from the women's plus size department.

Having the exact fashionable designs from the regular sized sections available to full-figured men and women at their size I think promote a liberating attitude and boost their confidence knowing that these styles can also be flattering to their body shape.

As if it wasn't enough that a plus size woman's weight was the subject of brickbats for many years, she also had to be contend against unappealing plus size clothing. Since most ready-to-wear garments are for the lean-bodied, the larger than average woman was left with limited, and worst, dull choices.

Well, we can put that aforementioned thought away for a while, maybe even for good, as today's fashion world finally heeded the call of creating stylish clothing for the plus size woman. The market for plus size clothing proved to be mutually rewarding both on its target audience and its perpetrators or better yet "fairy godmothers". A wide range of fashionable choices is especially tailored to the womanly curves of the plus size female.

Despite differences in appearance, height and weight, all women would like the access to trendy clothes. Shopping is an activity they take seriously and as such, what they buy should very well make up for how much they spend. A well-fitted garb can boost self-esteem and we all know that in the ways of the world, life seems to be more rewarding to people who feel good about themselves and face the world head high.

For instance, attending the prom is an important occasion in a teenage girl's life and the plus size teen can have as many chances of finding a flattering nightgown as her thinner counterparts would.
