Why is Keyword Density Important

Improving keyword density on a website is an important consideration when creating website content as well as adding new content (articles, blog posts, etc) towards increasing search engine results. It is important that you understand why keyword density is important, and what it means to your website. Keywords are words that regular internet users use in order to search for information on the internet. Searchers punch these keywords or keyword phrases into the search engine, looking for specific results.

Keyword density is described as being the ratio between the word being searched for, the keyword, and the total quantity of words on a given web page where the keyword appears. For example, if your keyword occurs only one time on a page that is comprised of 500 words or more, then you have a lower keyword density in comparison to a keyword appearing six or seven times on the same page or a page of a similar length.

As far as the search engines are concerned, to a certain extent, when a particular keyword possesses a keyword density that is higher on a particular webpage, then the chances of that particular page obtaining a higher search engine rank are going to increase. Not every search engine is going to evaluate keyword density the same as others, and most search engines, like Yahoo, Google and Bing have their own unique and proprietary algorithms that they use in order to calculate the optimum keyword density for a given page.

Keyword density is something that can be improved, but there is such a thing as density that is too high, and you have to understand what the right density is in order to benefit from the algorithms that appraise these keywords in your content. You should keep in mind that every search engine takes keyword density into account, it is just different how each one ranks websites based on keywords, and some even differ in what level of keyword density they perceive to be satisfactory. Generally, you want your content to be keyword-driven without being keyword stuffed. This means that your content should be written around the appropriate keywords and should use the appropriate keywords without over-using them. 1% -3% is considered to be a comfortable keyword density. But do not get misled into believing that you can or even should try to “dial in” keyword density. Rather, write for human beings first; then keep you’re the keyword(s) you are targeting in mind so that it is properly represented in the textual content.

You can use different combinations and synonyms for your most important keywords, and this will benefit your content even more. Writing about “auto insurance in California” for example, will allow you to use “auto insurance in California”, “California auto insurance”, “California car insurance” and a number of other synonymous keywords in order to write relevant and keyword-driven content without over-stuffing the same keyword into the content too many times.

You should try to write content that centers on your most important keywords. Make sure to use the important keywords and synonyms, and focus on writing content that flows around the keywords rather than simply trying to inject the keyword as often as possible. This is the best way to write search engine friendly content, utilizing solid keyword density in the process. Remember, there’s no right or wrong density here so it’s also good to look at what your top competition is doing as well.
