When you consider the future of palm oil, it is difficult not to first consider its past. Palm oil has long been a staple in traditional African homes. For thousands of years the fruit of the oil palm has been crushed and pressed to express rich, red colored oil that is used in cooking traditional dishes, in baking and for deep-frying. It is also common in Southeast Asian cuisine. Crude palm oil, a type of unrefined palm oil, has been used in industrial settings since the Industrial Revolution. Recently, virgin and organic palm oil have become popular among health conscious people across the world.

The future of palm oil is as bright as the oil is red. Research into the properties of the oil as well as its benefits is ongoing. We can expect to see more information regarding the health benefits of palm oil in the future.

Palm oil has a bright future for several important reasons.

1. Palm oil has a centuries old record of safe use. For thousands of years, it has been uses as nutritious and safe edible oil.
2. It is a good source of energy. Because palm oil is so easy to digest, the body can utilize it as an energy sources. In some regions of the worlds, it is a vital source of fatty acids.
3. Palm oil is sustainable. Because of the relatively long harvesting period, the oil palm is considered to be a highly sustainable oil source.
4. The oil is free of cholesterol and saturated fatty acids. Palm oil is the only vegetable oil that is completely cholesterol free. Because it does not need hydrogenation, it is free of trans fatty acids.
5. It is an excellent source of linoleic acid, one of the essential fatty acids.
6. Palm oil is loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants, like Vitamin E are essential for continuing health. Because they counteract free radicals, they may protect against degenerative diseases.
7. It is one of the richest sources of carotenoids, another form of antioxidant.

This information, combined with recent studies has shown that palm oil is one of the best vegetable oils on the market today. From lowering cholesterol levels to preventing breast cancer, future studies of palm oil may result in further benefits.

Recent studies and an increased marketing campaign have brought about a rise in awareness regarding palm oil. Some fast food companies are turning to palm oil for deep-frying purposes as the country continues to focus on healthy eating. While today, it is possible for consumers to purchase palm oil only from specialty health stores or online, it is likely that it will soon be readily available at grocery stores and markets.

The future of palm oil is bright. It will likely become the most widely used cooking oil throughout the world. As more research is conducted and more people become aware of palm oil as a healthy vegetable oil choice, it will continue to grow in popularity.
